Papers of the Libertarian Party, 1973-1980.

The collection contains correspondence, party literature, campaign material and memorabilia of the national and state parties. Much of the collection was generated by the 1976 Presidential campaign of Roger Lea MacBride and consists of correspondence and memoranda of MacBride and his campaign committee, particularly national chairman Edward H. Crane III, national campaign director Robert H. Meier, and administrative assistant Linda Webb, together with general party literature, position papers, publicity material and press releases, agendas, itineraries, convention material, speeches by MacBride and running mate David P. Bergland and newsclippings. Topics include secret service protection for minor party candidates (The Federal Election Campaign Act), state and local party organization, publicity, fundraising, and party efforts to get on state ballots. Papers of the Wisconsin Libertarian Party and major spokesman Alyn W. Hess include correspondence of Hess, also president of the Wisconsin Gay People's Union, a party constitution, party literature, petitions, circular letters, memoranda and newsclippings, chiefly regarding the 1976 campaign. The 1980 campaign of Ed Clark is represented entirely by printed material including position papers, newsletters, press releases and Clark's book A New Beginning. There are newsletters and circular letters from national and some state headquarters including runs of Libertarian News, 1973-1977, and Southern Libertarian Messenger 1972- Videotapes of MacBride speaking on various issues and a movie film on the Libertarian Party complete the collections.
